I had the devil of a time figuring out what was going on, and why. However, in this book, he doesn't write very coherently. Blaylock writes beautifully, with evocative descriptions and a flair for quirky characterization. He pops into stories by Blaylock and Tim Powers quite regularly, sometimes even as a main character. It also has the poet William Ashbless in it, which is always nice to see. It's the story of a boy, his crazy father, his best friend who happens to be a half-mermaid inventor, and an evil doctor who may be a fish.
